 The Pousada Dona Maria I is situated in the square in front of the Queluz National Palace, known as The Portuguese Versailles.This beautiful Rococo palace, now open to visitors, was the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family during the 18th century. The mirror lined Throne Room is embellished with intricate ‘rocaille’ gilt carvings and the museum houses an important art collection, once owned by the royal family. The formal gardens and fountain create an oasis of calm and are a perfect setting for viewing this magnificent building. Queluz is within easy reach of Lisbon, 5 kms. from the outskirts and 12 kms. from the centre. The Pousada Dona Maria I, a pink and white baroque treat, formerly housed the Royal Guard, and was opened as a Pousada in 1995. Its attractive interior contains a small private theatre. The Cozinha Velha restaurant is the original Palace kitchen with timbered ceiling and stone fireplace.
