 This elegant house stands at the head of a curving, tree-lined drive. Eugene Langdon Wilks, a great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, completed it in 1902. It remained in the family until 1987, when its transformation into a small country-house hotel began. Today, its 200 acres of lawns, gardens, and woodlands make for an ideal retreat.
The main house, of red brick with classical pediment and Palladian-style windows, has a beautiful symmetry. Throughout, the emphasis is on comfort rather than grandiosity. The on-site spa offers a complete range of treatments. Most rooms surround the cloister garden. Each is individually decorated; most have fireplaces. The furnishings consist of handsome antique reproductions, mahogany wardrobes, ginger-jar porcelain lamps, and armchairs upholstered with luxurious fabrics.
The Green Room: queen-sized ash bed with en suite bathroom. The Pine Room: four-poster, queen-sized pine bed with en suite bathroom. Very sunny. The Attic Suite: romantic, sunken room with TV, gabled window, sitting room, skylights, queen-sized bed and en suite bathroom with marble Jacuzzi. Willow Cottage: newly renovated, 1940s-style bright and sunny cottage with French doors, TV/VCR, fireplace and dining area. Queen-sized bed plus marble Jacuzzi for two, kitchenette and barbecue. The entire property of the Whiffin Spit Lodge is an early 20th-century home that has been recently renovated. Stroll the surrounding West Coast gardens and sit on the porch. No smoking or pets allowed.
The light, airy dining room serves fine regional cuisine. Main courses run C$22 to $30 (US$15 to $20). Tea is served on the verandah, and there's a bar.
